Sarah's Favorite Time Period

First off, I'd like to take this moment to agree with Sierra on her blog post from Monday. I love historical novels, but I just really don't feel comfortable with all of the information that goes into them. I admire authors who write those kinds of novels. Contemporary romance and paranormal romance are my fortes.

Anyways! Continuing with our discussion of time periods, I really enjoy Ancient Greece and Rome, though there haven't been too many romances written in that vein, that I know of. I have read a couple of Sherrilyn Kenyon's books that incorporate that time period. I also enjoy European history, including Scottish, Irish, and English settings anywhere from the Dark Ages to Regency. I attempted a double major in English: Creative Writing and History (emphasis on European History), but decided that graduating was more important than being a perpetual college student.

I'm very passionate about history. Though, as long as the novel's plot is intriguing, I'm willing to give it a shot. =) How about you guys? What are your favorite time periods to read about? Also, do you have any favorite time periods in general that you don't feel are focused on enough in fiction? Make sure to leave me a message, so I can hear what you think!

Sarah, some novels which are a mixture of romance and adventure you may like to read are:

Colleen McCullough - wrote a Masters of Rome series starting at the time of Gaius Julius Caesar and family which also covers the battles and political intrigue explaining how Rome became a force to be reckoned with in the ancient world. I can recommend The First Man in Rome, The Grass Crown, Fortune's Favorites, have still to read the other 4 novels within this series.

Mary Stewart wrote 3 books following the life of Merlin from childhood to death (yes King Arthur's Merlin) which is set at the time of Roman-run Britain (The Crystal Cave, The Hollow Hills and The Last Enchantment).

I also enjoy anything to do with ancient Egypt - Wilbur Smith’s River God, The Seventh Scroll and Warlock. I still need to read the last of the series The Quest.

Happy reading!

Great post Sarah! I love Greece and Rome too. And Irish and Scottish as well. Those are all very interesting areas as far as I'm concerned.

You know, I think I would like to find a romance set in the Egyptian time period. I'm sure there is something out there, but I've not run across it.

Great blog today, Sarah. Had me thinking.
